Trump Stands Firm on North Korea’s Total Denuclearization: White House

The White House reiterated on Tuesday that President Donald Trump remains committed to achieving the "full denuclearization of North Korea," addressing concerns that his recent description of the country as a "nuclear power" might indicate a shift in U.S. policy.

National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes made this statement shortly after North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that leader Kim Jong-un had visited a nuclear materials production facility and a nuclear weapons research institute, seemingly showcasing the nation’s military strength.

"President Trump is steadfast in his pursuit of North Korea’s complete denuclearization, just as he was during his first term," Hughes told Yonhap News Agency in response to an inquiry.

Hughes also highlighted Trump’s diplomatic efforts with Kim, stating, "President Trump cultivated a constructive relationship with Kim Jong Un, and his strategic balance of pressure and diplomacy led to the first-ever leadership-level commitment to full denuclearization."

Hughes was referring to the 2018 Singapore Summit, during which Trump and Kim agreed to work toward the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula while fostering a new bilateral relationship.

U.S. Policy on North Korea Remains Unchanged
A U.S. government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, reinforced that Washington’s position on North Korea has not wavered.

"There has been no shift in policy regarding the DPRK," the official told Yonhap News Agency, using the acronym for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, North Korea’s official name.

Despite this assertion, Trump’s recent comments have sparked speculation. Last week, he referred to North Korea as a "nuclear power," a phrase U.S. officials have traditionally avoided to prevent any implication of recognizing Pyongyang’s nuclear status. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth similarly used the term during his confirmation hearing earlier this month.

Trump’s characterization of North Korea fueled speculation that if he reengages with Kim, he might seek an agreement to mitigate North Korea’s nuclear threat rather than insist on its complete disarmament. However, Hughes’ comments appear to counter that interpretation.

Kim Jong-un’s Nuclear Site Visit Raises Concerns
KCNA reported that Kim recently toured nuclear-related facilities, calling for an increase in the production of weapons-grade nuclear materials to strengthen North Korea’s nuclear capabilities. Analysts suggest this move could be a strategic attempt to enhance Pyongyang’s leverage ahead of any potential negotiations with Washington.

In a recent Fox News interview, Trump signaled openness to reestablishing dialogue with Kim, referring to the North Korean leader as a "smart individual" and "not a religious extremist"—remarks that suggest he still sees an opportunity for diplomatic engagement.

During his first term, Trump met with Kim three times: at the historic Singapore Summit in June 2018, the Hanoi Summit in February 2019, and at the inter-Korean border in Panmunjom in June 2019. However, negotiations came to a standstill following a failed round of working-level talks in Stockholm in October 2019.

Russia’s Growing Influence on North Korea
Some analysts believe that North Korea’s interest in resuming negotiations with Washington has waned as it strengthens ties with Russia. Pyongyang has reportedly provided military aid to Moscow in exchange for vital resources such as food, energy, and security assurances, further solidifying their partnership.

As Trump’s administration explores potential diplomatic engagement with North Korea, global observers will be watching closely to see whether the U.S. maintains its firm stance on denuclearization or considers an alternative approach to addressing Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions.
